Welcome to a library where 'quiet please' has been replaced by 'what if.' My programming strategy transforms the traditional library into a dynamic hub for student-led innovation. These images capture that mission in action: from math-intervention STEM cup stacking and drone piloting in the stacks, to students engineering elaborate cardboard mazes for Bowser, our library pet. But it's about more than logic; it's about empathy and art. You'll also see students utilizing 'Busy Boxes' for focused creativity and weaving 'Plarn' (plastic bag yarn) into waterproof sleeping mats for the unhoused, proving that the modern school library is the true heart of campus culture and community care.
I believe the library's impact should extend far beyond the school day and reach into the homes of our families. My community engagement strategy focuses on creating meaningful 'side-by-side' learning experiences. This has included our Art & Literacy Nights, where families explore storytelling through canvas and color, and our 'Thank It Forward' sessions, which empower parents and students to practice emotional literacy through shared gratitude journaling. To ensure these connections continue, I host 'Book Tastings' that pair reading previews with on-site public library card registration. By directly supplying parents with high-quality titles to build their own home libraries, we aren't just checking out books—we are cultivating a lifelong, community-wide culture of literacy.
Expertise is meant to be shared. My commitment to the field extends to empowering fellow educators and advocating for the vital role of modern school libraries. Whether I am representing Sheldon ISD at the Texas Library Association (TLA) conference or presenting sessions on unconventional engagement—like our 'Library Pets' workshop at Setting the Trend—my goal is to provide actionable, 'out-of-the-box' strategies for my peers. Beyond the workshop room, I am a vocal advocate for library impact, frequently co-hosting district-wide professional development and presenting to the Board of Trustees to ensure our libraries remain the heart of instructional innovation and student success.
